Slice of Life: ‘Facing struggles does not reduce my enthusiasm for work’

Thangaraju T, 57, worker at a dairy shop

    Chennai

I came from Naduveeraptu in Cuddalore. I work as a labourer in a diary shop in the city for which I have to travel about 22 kilometres every day. I took up this job three years ago and it serves as a good economic support for my family. I have a daughter who has completed her bachelor’s degree in engineering. I am quite satisfied with my work and have previously worked as a labourer in other departmental stores.

In November, we met with a fire accident. It was so heart breaking, but we managed to put our lives together in the best way possible. The shop was reconstructed, and additional safety measures were taken. I do face some struggle, but it does not reduce my enthusiasm towards work and I believe that work is worship.

The best part of working in a shop for dairy products is that you can look at kids who enjoy eating ice creams with joy. Sometimes, it makes me so happy when I give these kids that instant piece of happiness that could change their tears to a smile. I feel that it is the best customer review a shopkeeper can get.
