Q and A: Govt should upgrade NEET training centres
In the backdrop of two girl candidates from Tamil Nadu committing suicide after failing to clear NEET, Dr GR Ravindranath, general secretary of Doctors’ Association for Social Equality (DASE), has demanded that the Centre and State governments should take responsibility for the deaths, and urged to provide reservation for government school students in medical admission.

How did the Tamil Nadu students perform in NEET?
When compared to other States, the pass percentage in Tamil Nadu is low. Due to this, chances of students from the State getting medical seats in all-India quota or in private colleges have become bleak. The Central government also is yet to release the merit list.
What about the coaching centres by the government?
The State government had failed to provide quality NEET training to the government school students. The government should upgrade the quality of these training centres and government schools. Instead of leaving open quota seats to all category students, the Central government had created a new unreserved category.
Should Central government fix fees for deemed to be universities?
Yes. The Central government should fix fees for private deemed to be universities. Allowing private universities to conduct admission will result in misconduct. The government should also allocate 65 per cent of the total seats in the private universities for the students coming from the State where they are located.
