Slice of Life: ‘Use of earthen pots must be made a habit’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I was born and brought up in Old Perungalathur. After Class 10, I could not continue studies and started working with my father, who was an earthen pot seller, in Tambaram. Our shop was started in 1988 and it’s still running in the same place. I am married and have two children — Deepak Raj and Swetha. Both of them are studying in college. I am looking after the business. I order and buy the pots on huge quantity from Mambakkam and Manapakkam.
Every day, I open the shop at 8.30am and close it by 10.30pm. There is no holiday for me and the shop is open all seven days a week. I visit a temple one a month and on that day, my friend would take care of the shop. People used to prefer and buy earthen pots earlier. Now the demand is less as the awareness on the benefits of using these pots has gone down.
Recently, people have started to show interest in such pots again. Water stored in earthen pots stays naturally chilled and it is good for health. This has to be followed in summer in every house. I am happy with my business and would love to continue this till the end. I want my children to study whatever they want till they desire and achieve their dreams.
