Reporter’s diary: Karnataka cops visit city to nab businessman, end up guarding his room
The economic offences wing police from Belgaum in Karnataka who reached the city to arrest a 48-year-old businessman in connection with a cheating case ended up guarding him at a hospital as he suddenly fell sick before boarding the return flight.

As the businessman developed breathing problems, they initially admitted him at the clinic at the airport premises, he was later sent to a private hospital on Greams Road in an ambulance.
The businessman is said to be wanted in a Rs 7-crore cheating case in Karnataka. While he had been absconding for the last few months, the Belgaum police traced him to the city, and arrived with a warrant and arrested him. They were supposed to take him to Hubli in an Indigo Airlines flight. But, around 3.30 pm, after all the security checks were cleared, the businessman suddenly developed a breathing problem. While the Karnataka police team initially thought that the businessman was acting, they could do but little except outside the hospital room where the businessman was undergoing treatment.
Sources at the airport said that this is not first time that a suspect has fallen ill at the airport while being in police custody. “Six months ago, the Delhi police had arrested an accused in the city, but since he fell sick at the airport before boarding a flight, they had to wait for a few days until he was fit to be flown to Delhi,” said the source.
