Reporter’s Diary: After riding sans helmet, cop uses CCTV footage to defend himself, internet not convinced

While the police was appreciated for taking action against one of their own for breaking the helmet rule, the suspended sub-inspector also took to social media to explain his actions.

In a message that did the rounds on WhatsApp, the suspended SI claimed that he had removed his helmet to speak with an auto driver who was driving recklessly and brushed by his two-wheeler. The SI claimed that as the auto driver drove away, he started to chase him and forgot to wear his  helmet in the melee. To support his claim, he shared CCTV footage of him keeping his helmet on the tank of his bike, the auto driver’s photo and a statement he had submitted after he was brought to police station. 

But, this video has not gone well with the public as they still claim it is a misuse of power. Several social media users wondered if the traffic police would overlook the violation if general public were to give such excuses for not wearing helmets.
