Slice of Life: ‘I had to stop medicines as I barely manage to survive with my salary’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I was born in a village in Villupuram, from where I came to Chennai about 30 years ago and settled down here. When I was in my native village, not many considered higher studies to be of any importance. So I studied only till Class 8, after which I dropped out of school. After I came to the city, I first began working at a coal shop like a salesman. That job helped me earn Rs 30-40 a month. I managed to save some money from the monthly salary, and used that to for my marriage expenditure. I spent Rs 905 on my marriage, and still remember how big an event it was. My family includes wife, four daughters and a son.
