N Gunasekar (44), Mechanic

I was born and brought up in Kolathur. I was not a good student. I failed Class 9 and dropped out of school after that. I started working with one of my relatives, who was a mechanic, after that and learnt the basics of the trade. I worked there for five years and then started looking for other jobs. Though I worked with three to four companies, none of them paid me enough. So I started my own mechanic shop after around six years. I have a son and a daughter and they are studying. I want them to study well and land a good job or business — whatever they desire. I don’t want my children to suffer like I did. My parents passed away when I was young and my life has been difficult since then. I faced many problems to find an employment. So I ensured to educate my children. I earn around Rs 500 on an average every day and I am happy with whatever I get. However, sometimes it’s difficult to meet both the ends. This summer, my business took a hit due to water scarcity. I could not take vehicles for water wash during peak summer.
