Slice of Life: ‘Working in hotels, I saved money to open my own eatery'
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I was born and brought up in Chennai. I own a fast food shop in Avadi now. I studied only till Class 5 and then started working with my father at a restaurant near my locality due to our poor financial status. I worked at several shops and restaurants as an assistant, cook and also a housekeeping employee. I learnt everything about running an eatery and always wanted to open my own shop.
I got married when I was 25 years old and had family responsibilities to take care of. I would get around Rs 5,000 per month initially. I started saving money to open my own shop and then finally opened it seven years ago. I earn at least Rs 1,000 every day and I have two other employees working at my shop. I am happy with my work as I can see that the financial condition of my family has improved and I can ensure that my children get good education.
I have two children and they are in college now. I hope I am able to support my children to pursue the carrier of their choice. The business has developed in the city over the years. I get to interact with people from different age groups who come to my shop."
