Slice of Life: ‘I don't visit my ailing wife as there is no money to spare'

I was an auto-rickshaw driver for several years and I earned enough money during those days. My driving licence expired in 2018 and I could not renew it as my eyesight was deteriorating. Also, I did not have enough money to cover renewal charges. I am staying in a ‘Madam’ in Chetpet. Apart from driving auto-rickshaw, the only other job that would suit me is as a security guard. But none of the building owners in the locality is ready to employ me citing my age. I requested a job at a courier firm but they, too, refused to employ me as I am illiterate. So, I took up a job as an acting security guard. Whenever other guards in the area go on leave, I fill in for them. My wife is paralyzed, and she is bedridden. She is now staying at her mother’s house along with my son. Even though I do not have any problem with her, I cannot visit her as I do not have money. If I go to visit her, I should buy her fruits and give some money. No man could visit his ailing wife empty-handed. I had tried to apply for an old-age pension through a local politician thrice in vain.
