Slice of Life: ‘We provide new dishes unavailable in our area’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I was born and brought up in Chennai. Earlier, I was running a browsing centre in Periyar Nagar. However, as people started using mobile phones for everything, my business came down. I was unemployed for a few days. My husband and I had the interest to open an eatery. My husband was the one who motivated me to start a business instead of sitting at home. I started the shop in 2012 and named it Grill and Barbeque. The shop, which is in Periyar Nagar, serves shawarmas and barbeques. These varieties of food are a favourite of youngsters. However, they are not available anywhere else in the locality. As I am fond of food and want to try new dishes, I setup the shop in the area. Unlike other fast food shops, we do not add too much of masala in the food. Everything is homemade and healthy and that is the reason why many customers are attracted to our shop. We also take online orders through Zomato, Uber and Swiggy. Though there are many shops that were opened in the locality, it does not affect us. Since we are hygienic and add less masala, people prefer our shop. We have regular customers, too. Most of our staff are from Kolkata. Though I spend most of my time in the shop, I also try to balance my household works and manage to look after my family.
