Slice of Life: ‘Sponsors and media should encourage para-athletes, too’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
My leg was amputated below the knee soon after birth due to wrong administration of medicine. I have lived with one leg my whole life. I have completed a diploma in mechanical engineering. During my school days, I wanted to participate in sports competitions but my teachers would not include me citing my disability. I used to run whenever I got a chance. After finishing schooling, an old friend contacted me and told me about Paralympic Games.
After that, with the help of some people, I bought the equipment required to participate in T44. After training hard, I won many games and went to the State team. I did not stop with that. My continuous hard work took me till 100m T44 Paralympic Games. I am training hard for that.
My only goal is to get selected for the Olympics, representing India, and I believe that I will win gold. I am not going to stop until I get what I want. Several people who are disabled like me are confining themselves. They should come out and make the world turn to look at them. Sponsors and media should also encourage us to do our best.
