Slice Of Life: ‘Govt should help me with funds to start a shop’

    S Munna, 37, snacks vendor

    Chennai

I was born and brought up in Kancheepuram. When I was in Class 5, I discontinued my studies due to personal reasons and started working at various shops in the neighbourhood. In the wide range of experience that I received, I equipped myself with the knowledge of different fields. In a few years, I got married and decided to opt for a stable job.

So, I started to sell tomatoes in Kancheepuram. But since I was not getting a good profit out of it, I gave up the business and switched to selling snacks. That is when I started a small snacks business on a handcart opposite the government school on Gandhi Road in Kancheepuram. Every day, I open my stall in the morning and run it till evening. I will not close the shop unnecessarily unless if I fall sick. Currently, I earn Rs 500 a day. However, I have an eye problem and my vision is already blurred. Yet, I am working hard to run the family and provide all the essential needs for my two school-going children. I sell only freshly packed eatables to my customers as most of them are school-going children.

My longtime dream is to run a shop of my own, as I am capable of maintaining a shop well. But I do not have the resources for it now. So I request the government to help me by providing a small fund to set up a shop.
