Citizen Connect: Sewage water overflows into Nehru Street in Madhavaram, raises a stink: Residents

The Nehru Street in Madhavaram is one of the prime residential areas in the locality as it branches out of Madhavaram-Redhills Road and is located right next to a busy vegetable market. Moreover, the street faces the Greater Chennai Corporation office (Zone 3), but the residents complain that the overflowing of drainage on the street has not been set right by the officials.

Esakki Shankar, a resident whose house is by the street, said, “For the last two weeks, drainage water has been overflowing into the street.”

Several complaints have been lodged in the local sewage board, but there has been no permanent solution to this problem. “The water which lies stagnant on the street has had passers-by try and avoid the stretch and can also become a breeding ground for mosquitos. Several residents of the street have started complaining of viral and dengue fever and have been admitted in hospitals," Esakki said.

Another resident said that usually whenever there is a block in the drainage, conservancy workers would be deployed to remove it. "This time, however, the officials have turned a blind eye to it as they claim to be busy in the monsoon preparedness," he said. The resident added that there is a Perumal temple at the other end of the street and a temple pond. "If authorities do not attend to the problem to end it permanently, the temple pond faces the risk being polluted," he said.

Corporation officials of Madhavaram were not available for comments.
