Overflowing garbage bins an eyesore at Kamarajapuram, complain residents

Residents of Kamarajapuram in Nungambakkam complained that garbage was overflowing within an hour after sanitary workers cleaned the spot. Because of this, the officials should make necessary arrangements to clean the bin at least twice a day to keep the locality clean, they urged.

“There is a transformer near the garbage bin. During rain, the water stagnates above ankle level and the garbage floats near the transformer. It is scary to walk on that side of the street. Especially during festival season like Deepavali and Pongal, the entire street is littered with waste. Sanitary workers will clean the spot only the next day. Until then, it stinks a lot,” said Soundarya R, a resident of Kamarajapuram.

Local residents said that despite sanitary workers cleaning garbage every day, the street looks messy because of this. Hence, they have asked the Corporation officials to clean the waste twice a day as is being followed in many areas in the city.

“When the residents forget to dump the garbage when sanitary workers visit for door to door collection, within half an hour the garbage bin gets filled. If there are branches of tree and other materials dumped in the bin, the workers refuse to collect them,” said Vishakan M, another resident from Kamarajapuram.

The people here complained that they were going through a harrowing experience due to this.

“The dumped garbage has not only worsened the locality’s hygiene but has also increased mosquito menace. A foul smell is also emerging from the mound of waste, with cattle feeding on it and littering the area. Many residents are falling sick due to this. We request officials to act fast and bring an end to this problem,” saidGnanasekar P, another resident.

Not only cattle, the stray dogs and goats were rummaging through the waste looking for food, which leads to paper and plastic waste being strewn around the place, he added.

When contacted, a senior Corporation official said, “We have been instructed to remove the garbage bins in the area and make collect waste from the doorsteps twice a day. Till now, it is being monitored and we ensure steps are taken soon.”
