Motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, passing through Thiruvengadam Street in Perambur and the residents there, are put to risk by dangling cables. The public have raised the issue with multiple departments, including the civic officials, but have not yet succeeded in redressing the situation.

Adding another element of risk for them, one of the post is tilted towards the road that, they fear, can be dangerous for them.

“The post is located at the Patel Road lane intersection, which connects Vasan Street and Thiruvengadam Street. The streetlight posts here seem to have been completely taken over by broadband service providers, with cables dangling low from them,” said Raghukumar Choodamani, a resident of Perambur.

According to motorists who take this road, they are at risk of meeting with accidents due to this. The tilted post is also causing traffic congestion there, they added. So low is the cables hanging here have even been cases of pedestrians getting entangled in them. “Recently, a child from the neighbourhood tripped over the wires and fell down," said Aarthi S, a resident of the locality.

The post is tilted so much and in such a precarious condition that it would only need push for it to fall down, said Anushya, another resident, adding that despite its condition, the post is still bearing the weight of broadband cables. “There are heavy vehicles that pass through the load. One of them might hit the post leading to unfortunate incidents,” she cautioned.

The residents said they took up the matter with various authorities, including officials from the civic body and also from other departments like transport. However, all of them are passing the buck around, leaving the people here at wits end, as they are unable to find any solution to the problem.

When contacted, the officials at the Zonal office of the Greater Chennai Corporation said that they would take up the matter with the concerned department within the civic body and resolve the issue.
