The shutdown is important because social distancing is the best way to prevent the spread of the disease, as no specific treatment is available against the virus. This time is also crucial to spread awareness among the public on the nature of the disease, social distancing, and hand and personal hygiene. Meanwhile, the government and medical fraternity can work towards establishing treatment facilities and testing methods. As an ophthalmologist, we are open only for emergencies. If we are to go to the hospital, we ensure PPE for all doctors and staff members. We try to stick to teleconsultations for safety otherwise. Therefore, the number of patients I see has dropped. However, we do have many elderly patients. We gave them a hospital CUG number that they could contact for any details. It is tough for all of us, but we are managing in the interest of the community’s safety. Post lockdown, we need to still follow social distancing, hand hygiene, cough etiquette, personal hygiene and the rest. The numbers are less in India now, but the behaviour of the public will determine the numbers post lockdown. About 80 per cent of those affected will be asymptomatic and their immunity will get rid of the virus by itself. Only 20 per cent will show symptoms, of that 2 per cent could be severe. People must remember that positive thinking improves immunity, and will carry us through this. The lockdown has improved my knowledge of virology. I learned how to use PPEs effectively, as well as having the time to read more on recent practices and new advancements in ophthalmology, which I hope to implement in my practice soon. I also took part in many web seminars. I have also had a lot of time for family. They have been incredibly supportive of me, including my children. They have been sharing household responsibilities with me, as well as helping me with ideas to be implemented in the hospital for safe consultations. I have also got the time to help them with their school subjects, to improve on my cooking skills, and learn more exercises to stay fit.
