People always look forward to light-hearted entertainment: Aravind SA
Chennai’s own stand up comic Aravind SA is back once again with a new show called I Was Not Ready Da.
Chennai
“This is my second stand up special after my first show called Madrasi Da. I try and showcase many milestone events in my life in a funny way. The show encapsulates the funniest instances from the smallest things which surround us on a day-to-day basis. I hope it brings a wide grin on each person’s face when they watch it,” Aravind starts the conversation.
From his teenage love for white people and chatrooms to his all-inclusive approach to strip clubs in America, traumatising Sanskrit tutors and provoking news anchors in their shows, Aravind will walk the audience through many such contradictory moments of his life. Light-hearted content is much appreciated these days and Aravind feels that it is a good sign for standup comics. “Social media is constantly reminding us how amazing our friends’ lives are more than ours. Well, one can take a break from that and watch some light-hearted content — it is something which everyone looks forward to, especially in these distressing times. Stand up special is one of the best ways to keep viewers in high spirits.” I Was Not Ready Da will be premiered on Amazon Prime Video from November 27.
When quizzed if it is harder for Chennai comics to have a market when compared to the comics from other cities, he replies, “It is tough when compared to other cities but not because of the Chennai audience but because of the perceptions they have to deal with if a comic from the city does it in English. It is not tough if you are a comic who does shows in Tamil, but if you are a Chennai comic who does shows in English, then it is tough. It is not easy like Mumbai or Delhi stand up comedy scene where you are surrounded by stand up comic fraternity. You have to work harder to make sure you are heard in Chennai. That said, the Chennai audience is very supportive and encouraging. If you look at the number of people coming to Alex’s or my shows, it is huge. The wider the audience you have to raise your bar higher,” he adds.
