Chennai-based artist makes drab yellow postcards colourful with sketches
Padma Malini Soman always had a connection with postcards — during her childhood, on every weekend, her parents took her to the post office and she was familiar with yellow postcards from then on.

Later, when the artist started exhibiting her work in galleries, she realised that art enthusiasts from middle-class communities are not able to buy paintings. “But they wish to have some artwork at home. I wanted to make art more affordable. I also read that MF Hussain used to carry at least 100 postcards whenever he travels. This inspired me and I decided to try something similar. Not just making art affordable, but I also wanted to remind people that yellow postcards still exist,” says Padma Malini Soman.
She uses pens, pencils and oil pastels to draw beautiful images that come to her mind. “I don’t follow any theme. But sometimes, people say that there is a bit of feminism in my drawings. I generally draw what influences me daily,” she adds.
