Muster roll hack: Other divisions to be probed

The Southern Railway, which suspended three of its employees, including a commercial supervisor, posted at Chennai Central for their alleged involvement in muster roll tampering scam, seems to be determined to cleanse up the system as it has decided to extend the scope of probe to divisions outside Chennai also to check and act on such malpractice, if any.

Sources at the top level in the SR revealed that the muster rolls of other divisions have also been brought under scanner now.

“We suspect that similar tampering of muster rolls could have happened outside Chennai division and hence we have expanded the scope of the investigation and decided to scrutinise musters in other divisions as well.”

The officer also admitted that they were not averse to referring the case to CBI even while the departmental inquiry goes on. Ironically, the suspended commercial supervisor was seen occupying his room at the outward parcel office at Chennai Central even on Tuesday. Pertinently, the union members had called on general manager Vashista Johri on Monday and a few senior officer bearers had even persuaded him to revoke the suspension. However, the GM, it has been reliably learnt, had assured acquiescence if the evidence corroborated the innocence of the suspended staff. Meanwhile, RPF (Railway Protection force) has heightened security at the divisional headquarters to quell resistance by the  union in which the suspended staff are members.  Officers privy to the development also admitted that security has been beefed up more so after a face-off between the union functionaries and a commercial department officer who had questioned the alleged presence of two retired staff (another on sick leave) representing the employee’s union at the PNM (permanent negotiating machinery) meeting which took place a day before the issuance of the suspension order.
