Vice-Chancellor Sandeep Sanchetti, Pro-VC Dr Balasubramanian and Registrar N Sethuraman said with the A++ grading by NAAC, SRMIST was classified as a Category-1 institute by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Union HRD Ministry with full autonomy.

They said SRMIST was awarded the Grade A++ with a score (CGPA) of 3.55 on a four-point scale.

The NAAC Accreditation will be valid for five years ‘’It is considered as one of the biggest achievements as yet by SRMIST as last year NAAC switched over to a more objective and stringent accreditation process’’, they said.

In the new methodology, about 70 per cent was assigned to quantitative metrics for which the institute was asked to upload evidence, which was subsequently verified using computer-based tools.

Of the 33 universities which have applied for accreditation under this new and stringent methodology, only two other universities other than SRMIST have got A++ so far, they said.

They said consequent upon achieving a score higher than the threshold value of 3.51, SRMIST has been placed under Category-1 University by the UGC and MHRD as per the UGC (Categorisaton of Universities (only)) for grant of Grade Autonomy Regulations, 2018, which was yet another in its cap.

‘’As a Category-1 University, SRMIST will be automatically Deemed to be under section 12B of the UGC Act, 1956. Once SRMIST is under 12B, it is eligible to receive funds from the Central Government, UGC and other government departments for various schemes’’, they said.

By becoming Category-1 University, SRMIST joins an elite group of two central universities, 12 state universities and 11 deemed to be universities in India.

In Tamil Nadu only three Universities, including SRMIST, have been granted this rare distinction.
