The child, Jayalakshmi (4), is the daughter of Ravi (29), a ragpicker, and Selvi (26), who live in Washermanpet. Selvi had left the child with her mother Kanniyammal before heading for work, said police.

But as she was playing outside the house on Adhiyappan Nayakan Street, Jayalakshmi mysteriously went missing. After searching for the child in the locality, the couple lodged a complaint with Kothavalchavadi police on Friday morning.

A case was registered and CCTV footage from the locality was retrieved which showed an unidentified woman carrying the child. Police circulated the images of the woman and the kid on WhatsApp.

Meanwhile, Railway Police at Chennai Central noticed an elderly woman standing with a child under mysterious circumstances. On inquiry, she told police that it was the child who approached her and hence she picked her up. Following this, the child was retrieved and handed her over to the Child Line staff.

Railway police then alerted Kothavalchavadi police, following which the child was united with the parents.
