Cop takes home seized money, shunted out
A police inspector attached to the Guindy police station was transferred to the Armed Reserve as he took home Rs 6 lakh seized from gamblers during a raid in a star hotel, without registering a case.
Chennai
The action was taken against NS Kumar, law and order inspector, based on a complaint that the failed to hand over the money seized from a group of men who were gambling in the hotel room. On February 2 night, inspector Kumar reportedly conducted the raid and seized six mobile phones and Rs 6 lakh.
“He failed to produce the money in the court and did not register a complaint against the men,” said a police source. Following this, the senior police officers were informed about it and Kumar was transferred out.
Sources added that the officer went alone for the raid and seized the money. However, the men from whom the cash was seized realised that gambling is an offence that carries a fine. After consulting their lawyers, the men approached a senior police officer in the city with a compliant.
Following that, an inquiry was conducted by the Deputy Commissioner of Police and the inspector produced the entire money seized during the raid. As he had failed to register the case, he had been transferred out, sources added.
