Commuters say Thiruporur bus stand unusable, renovation assured
Commuters using the Thiruporur bus stand complain that the facility is not being maintained properly by the officials and that even the toilets are not usable leading to a lot of inconvenience for the travelling public.
Chennai
The Thiruporur bus stand on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) is one of the important bus station in the locality and maintained by the Thiruporur town panchayat. Buses to Chengalpattu, Mahabalipuram, Thirukazhunkundram, Tambaram and services to Broadway, Central and Adyar in Chennai city are being operated from the bus stand. People also throng the famous Lord Muruga’s temple in the town during important and festival occasions.
Regular commuters claimed that for the past few months, the bus station is not being maintained properly. The toilets are not cleaned and they smell so bad that people could not even enter inside it.
The bus station does not even have a shelter and when it rains suddenly, the people who are standing at the bus stop have no other go than get drenched in rain.
R Rajeswari, a regular commuter from Thiruporur said, “Even the surroundings around the bus stand are bad. It smells a lot as garbage in the vicinity of the bus stand is being cleaned only twice in a month. There is no proper schedule at the bus stop and proper lighting at night.” She added, “The office, in which the drivers and conductors used to sign their attendance register, remains closed most of the time so the buses are not operating on time often.”
Local residents claimed that repeated complaints to the Thiruporur town panchayat have not got any response and that the public are forced to suffer. With the monsoon season approaching, they are concerned that public might be put to more suffering during the rain.
When contacted about the bad conditions at the bus stand, the Thiruporur town panchayat staff K Umapathi said, “There are plans to develop the bus stand and soon the works will be started for the same.” He added that all issues would be addressed soon during the renovation works.
