    13-yr-old youngest to undergo bilateral lung transplant

    A complex bilateral lung transplant was performed on a 13-year-old girl at a city hospital recently. The patient who was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension is the youngest patient in the country to undergo a bilateral lung transplant.

    Josephine Swetha from Tambaram was admitted to Fortis Malar hospital with severe breathlessness and was diagnosed with primary pulmonary hypertension. She had also developed right heart failure.


    After evaluation, the team of doctors decided to do bilateral lung transplant as the heart function was likely to improve once the lungs were transplanted. Doctors administered Immunosuppression therapy to prevent rejection of the organ. The surgery went successfully that led to the proper functioning of lungs after the transplant.


    The complex procedure was performed by an expert team at Fortis Malar Hospital. Josephine was the youngest Indian to have a bilateral lung transplant done.
