Jaya’s niece seeks speedy disposal of Poes Garden cases

The representation in this regard was made before Justice N Kirubakaran by Deepa’s counsel in his chamber on Thursday. The bench comprising Justice Kirubakaran and Justice Abdul Quddhose had reserved orders on the on the appeal filed by Pugazhendhi, the South Chennai District Deputy Secretary of J Jayalalithaa Peravai, which sought to appoint an administrator to administer the properties of late Jayalalithaa as the scope of third parties obtaining illegal custody of the properties left behind by Jayalalithaa loomed large.

Deepa’s counsel had submitted that with her aunt’s death anniversary falling on December 5, Deepa has planned to hold certain rituals at Poes Garden, where the former Chief Minister lived and hence sought to deliver the judgement reserved in relation to the properties.

It may be noted that Justice Kirubakaran while reserving orders had observed that virtue of law J Deepa and J Deepak, niece and nephew of Former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, are her class II legal heirs andthat the government cannot pretend they are not so.

Also, the bench on ascertaining from both Deepa and Deepak that there are no other blood relatives staking claims for the former Chief Minister’s properties, Justice Kirubakaran on quoting late Jayalalithaa’s famous lines that she was made by the people and hence was for the people, wondered as to why they both- Deepa and Deepak- should not offer the properties said to be worth over Rs 1,000 crore for public welfare.

To this, Deepa said that their intention was to form a trust in the name of her aunt and extend the benefits of her properties to the public.

It may be noted that Veda Nilayam, the Poes Garden residence of the late chief minister has been under attachment with the Income Tax Department since 2007 for Rs 16 crore tax dues. Similarly, two other properties in Chennai and a house property in Hyderabad owned by Jayalalithaa are also under attachment by the I-T Department.
