The victim Kirubakaran (60), a resident of Bhattacharya Street in Ayanavaram had retired as a carpenter from ICF two years ago. The police said that he had borrowed Rs 3 lakh from his colleague Kamalanathan (57) about 10 years ago for a 10 per cent interest and had surrendered his bank debit card and a cheque book as collateral.
Every month, Kamalanathan would withdraw Rs 30,000 as interest after Kirubakaran’s salary was credited in the account.
Two years ago, Kirubakaran retired from ICF and the settlement money was also deposited in the same account. By then, Kirubakaran had already paid over Rs 27 lakh as interest and repaid the original sum of Rs 3 lakh. But, when he received the debit card and the cheque book, a few months ago, he received an SMS on his phone that Rs 8 lakh had been withdrawn from his account. Shocked, Kirubakaran approached the bank and officials told him the cash was disbursed for a the cheque issued by bank in 2008.
When Kirubakaran confronted Kamalanathan and his wife Amul, they told him that they withdrew the money as he had failed to pay the interest properly.
Kirubakaran then approached the court, but the couple refused to return the Rs 8 lakh even after the court ordered in favour of Kirubakaran. Later, Ayanavaram inspector Natarajan booked a case against the couple as per the court directions and arrested Kamalanathan. He was remanded in judicial custody on Thursday, while his wife has been absconding.
