PWD gives clean chit to water samples from Chembarambakkam
The Public Works Department, after receiving several complaints of sewage being let into city lakes, collected water samples from Chembarambakkam Lake to check sewage contamination and sent the same to Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) office on Friday. However, officials said that the biochemical oxygen level in the water is within the limits.

“The lake was inspected after complaints of sewage being let out by the industries in the area. When the water from the lake started frothing, we suspected the presence of sewage in it. Though we suspected the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) to be polluting the reservoir, we found that they were treating the sewage before letting it into the lake. If the complaints were found to be true, we would have issued a notice to the industry,” said S Babu, Assistant Engineer, PWD.
“We collected the water samples two days ago, suspecting that the sewage levels have increased in the reservoir. But after testing it was found that the biochemical oxygen demand level in the water is within its limit of one milligram per litre. Since the pipe was small, the water flow caused the froth which happens frequently. Similarly, there was froth in the Red Hills reservoir, which is being tested,” said Somusundaran, Assistant Engineer, TNPCB.
