Speaking to students of a private women’s college in Kodambakkam, the ADGP said that his wing is planning to conduct awareness programmes on how to use the internet effectively and not get their attention diverted by the unnecessary contents available on the world wide web.
He said that although most of the crimes across the world are committed against women and children, such crimes are lesser in Tamil Nadu. He also said that the police department has been working towards further lowering the number.
Defending women’s choice of clothes as personal, the ADGP explained that laws are in favour of women to protect themselves in hostile situations. He also admitted that there were practical difficulties in downloading the Kavalan SOS mobile phone application and added that steps would be taken make the registration easier with lesser personal details.
“In a state with a population of 7.3 crore, the application has recorded only a 10 lakh downloads and Rs 4 lakh people have officially registered. This number needs to increase,” he said.
Meanwhile, city police continued their awareness campaigns on Kavalan SOS application and visited several colleges and spoke to the students on the importance of keeping the application in their phones.
