Railway to issue short-term passes for tourists

Tourists visiting Chennai for a short trip need not hire a taxi to travel from the city to its fringes. Instead, they can now enjoy unlimited rides in all suburban trains for a cheaper fare price, thanks to the move by the Southern Railway (SR) to introduce tourists passes.

The passes will be available for one, three and five days in both first and second classes.

An adult would be charged Rs 70, Rs 115 and Rs 140 for one-day, three-day and five-day passes respectively. The same would cost Rs 295, Rs 480 and Rs 575 in first class. The fare will be less for children.

Tourist pass holders will be allowed to travel in all suburban trains operated in the zone. The tickets that could be issued three days in advance will be valid till the midnight of date of validity, which would be printed on the ticket.

An official statement from the Railway added that no concession will be permitted on the tickets. Also, refund will not be admitted for non-use or partial use of the pass.

Refund will be permitted if it is done before the first day of validity, after deducting standard charges of Rs 30/Rs 60 for second and first class.
