Vacant space below 5 flyovers to turn into kids’ play areas
Vacant spaces under major flyovers in the city will turn into play areas for children as the Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to install children play equipment in the under-utilised space.
Chennai
According to a Corporation official, the Bridges Department has identified five flyovers in the city. “We will install benches and other resting facilities along with play equipment. The intent is to ensure optimum utilisation of space available in city limits,” the official added.
Mint flyover in north Chennai, Sardar Patel Road – LB Road flyover in Adyar, Sardar Patel – Gandhi Mandapam flyover in Kotturpuram, Dr Radhakrishnan Road – TTK Road flyover and Rangarajapuram flyover in Kodambakkam have been identified. The official said the space under those bridges are now misused by locals or encroached upon for parking vehicles and establishing small shops. “We will remove encroachments and upkeep the space. A detailed project report (DPR) is under preparation for this,” he explained.
Initially, the Corporation also mooted creating recreational and parking facilities under the five bridges but dropped the idea due to space constraint. “At least local children will utilise the space when we convert the space into play areas,” theofficial noted.
Tenders floated for vertical gardens
The Highways Department reportedly has a proposal to build a multilevel parking facility in the unused land available around the Kamaraj flyover (Butterfly bridge) in Koyambedu. Also, the Highway department would develop the space under the bridge as a culturally happening site by creating recreational facilities. While the other five bridges are being maintained by the civic body, the Highways Department maintains Koyambedu flyover.
On the other hand, the civic body had dropped a proposal to create pedestrian walkways and senior citizen-friendly facilities under all the big flyovers. The proposal was a part of the non-motorised masterplan, which is being developed by the civic body.
Meanwhile, tenders have already been floated for converting all the city flyovers maintained by the Chennai Corporation into vertical gardens and install dynamic lighting arrangements.
