400 sovereigns stolen from BJP leader’s house in Minjur
Days ahead of a marriage in the family, burglars targeted the house of a BJP leader in Minjur in Tiruvallur district and escaped with at least 400 sovereigns of jewellery and cash.

The incident happened on Thursday when RMR Janakiraman, national general council member of the BJP, had come with his family to Chennai for marriage shopping. The break-in came to light when they returned to the house in Mettupalayam in Minjur on Friday morning.
Janakiraman’s son and daughter-in-law had come from the US to attend the marriage of his brother’s daughter, scheduled to be held on January 20. The family had locked the house and went to Chennai for shopping. Later, they spend the night with Janakiraman’s brother.
When they returned on Friday morning, they noticed that the house was broke open and valuables were stolen. The police estimated that at least 400 sovereigns, approximately worth Rs 1 crore, were stolen from five cupboards kept in various rooms in the house, apart from at least Rs 50,000 cash.
After initial inquiry, the police said that the family had taken the gold ornaments from bank locker on Thursday and kept them in the bureau in view of the marriage. Janakiraman’s daughter in law, who arrived from the US, too had brought jewellery.
The burglars ransacked the bureaus and took away all the gold ornaments that were kept inside. Minjur police believe that that burglars might have been aware that the family had brought home the jewellery from bank lockers.
Though there are more than half a dozen workers in the household, all of them had gone home because the owners were not there. There were no surveillance cameras at the house, police added.
