Rs 9 crore makeover awaits 136-yr-old George Town bldg

“The building was damaged and is being renovated after a decade. We will refit the Madras terrace, Mughal plastering, strengthen the brick foundation and replace damaged windows and doors,” said a PWD official.

“Since it is a long process it will take more than a year to complete the renovation,” he added.

George Town was constructed by Robert Chisholm in 1884, and it is the oldest building built under the registration department, said the official. The building was used by the sub-register office, district register of North Chennai.

“We are planning to use traditional construction methods to add more strength to the building. The George Town building is the second heritage building in the city, after Humayun Mahal, which is under renovation,” said the official.

He also said that next on the queue for renovation is Presidency College’s Principal bungalow and Rs 10 crore would be spent on it.
