A refrigerator being sold for a meagre Rs 200, a sofa set for Rs 100 and a tricycle for Rs 50 would perhaps explain the interest that it received from the public.
According to a Chennai Corporation official, more than 1,500 items were sold in the swap shop from noon to evening. The civic body managed to earn Rs 16,000 by selling the items that would have otherwise been sent to dumping yard.
“We sold an old refrigerator for Rs 200 and a small cycle was sold at Rs 50. A visitor took a sofa set for Rs 100. We sold old books, toys, bags, shoes and others. Dresses were sold for Rs 10,” the official added.
The Greater Chennai Corporation organised swap shop in Adyar zone at TNHB community hall in Besant Nagar. The swap shop will function on Monday, a day before Boghi festival, during which the people incinerate unused and old items.
Those who did not want to purchase anything were asked to drop their reusable old items at ward offices in Adyar zone. On Sunday, several visitors were seen dropping their old items at the swap shop.
Sridhar Sukumar, a visitor, said he had dropped 15 kilograms of books and printer, and bought four books at Rs 10 each.
