The arrested persons have been identified as A Appu (24), K Jegan (29) and A Arun (30) of Triplicane. The deceased, G Ramkumar of Triplicane, was an AC mechanic. The Ice House police, who are investigating the incident, said that he has a few cases pending against him.

On Pongal day, the police had booked him for allegedly attacking one R Premkumar (25) from the same locality with a liquor bottle in a drunken brawl. As Ramkumar was under the influence of alcohol, he was reportedly asked to return to the police station on Thursday.

However, Ramkumar did not appear before the police. Meanwhile, Premkumar was discharged from the hospital on Saturday and decided to get revenge against Ramkumar.

On Sunday night, the gang headed by Premkumar reached Natesan Salai, where Ramkumar was standing near a tea shop. They attacked him and abducted him in the autorickshaw.

On information, Ramkumar’s father Gurumurthy lodged a police complaint against Premkumar. While three of Premkumar’s friends were picked up for interrogation, the police received information that Ramkumar was hacked to death and his body was dumped in Kovalam. His body was recovered and sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered under kidnap and murder charges and a hunt has been launched for the remaining suspects, including Premkumar.
