City roads to get Rs 1,160 cr facelift in six months
As many as 164 major bus route roads in the city will soon get a facelift, as the Greater Chennai Corporation has finalised contractors to carry out their repair and re-laying works at Rs 1,160 crore. Fund has also been allocated for pedestrian pathways along 82 roads, added official sources.

During a meeting with the contractors and project management consultants on Friday, Corporation Commissioner G Prakash instructed the contractors to complete the road works within the stipulated period of six months or earlier.
According to a Corporation official, 59 roads, including Ennore High Road, Tondiarpet High Road and Sardar Patel Road would be completely re-laid with funds under Chennai Mega City Development Mission (CMCDM) and Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (TURIF). The new roads would come up at ten zones such as Manali, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Alandur and Adyar.
Also, Nelson Manickam Road, New Avadi Road, Luz Church Road, TTK Road, Royappetah High Road and others would be repaired or partially re-laid, as these roads were badly damaged during the rains. Apart from these roads, partial re-laying works would be carried out on 115 bus route roads across the city. “This exercise has been taken up after the monsoon rains. We will spend Rs. 1,160 crore for the road projects,” the official said.
Under the project, the civic body has also planned to create pedestrian pathways in 82 roads in the city. Of the allotted Rs 1,160 crore, Rs 115 crore would be earmarked for the pedestrian pathways.
