    Prices dip in Koyambedu due to heavy arrivals

    The prices of vegetables, fruits and flowers have come down at the Koyambedu wholesale market following the increased inflow of commodities. The vegetable and flower vendors expect the prices to reduce further from next week. However, flower vendors said that the sale has been dull for the past two weeks despite the start of muhurtham season.

    Stating that the supply was more on Sunday compared to other days, S Mookandi, Secretary, Koyambedu Flower Merchants Association said, “The prices of flowers have reduced except jasmine and jasmine sambac as the season is yet to start. We are facing a loss in business from last month. Currently, jasmine is being sold for Rs 1,000 per kg, jasmine sambac Rs 750 – Rs 800 per kg, tuberose Rs 600, rose Rs 50 – Rs 60, damask rose Rs 70, sambangi Rs 75 – Rs 90, kanagamaram Rs 300 – Rs 400 and marigold for Rs 10 – Rs 20 per kg. We expect the price to increase in the next three days, as many muhurtham days are approaching continuously.”


    The vegetable vendors have also seen a dip in the prices by up to 20 per cent. “As expected, the market has started receiving more vegetables from the past two days and the prices have come down drastically. Now, onion is being sold for Rs 60 per kg, tomato for Rs 25 per kg, beans Rs 40 – Rs 45, peas Rs 40, carrot Rs 30 – Rs 35, broad beans Rs 30 per kg, radish Rs 10, and cabbage for Rs 10 per kg. The prices of onions are expected a drop toRs 30 – Rs 40 per kg from nextweek, as the season starts,” said P Sukumaran, Secretary, Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants’ Association.


    S Dhanasekar, Secretary, Vegetable, Fruits and Flower Merchants’ Association said that the prices of fruits have decreased by up to 10 per cent. Pomegranate is being sold for Rs 120 per kg, apple for Rs 120 – Rs 170 per kg, grapes (with seed) Rs 70 per kg, and orange Rs 100 per kg.
