Tribunal orders insurance firm to settle claims worth Rs 7 L
The Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal, Chennai, directed United India Insurance to settle two claims worth Rs 7 lakh to the petitioners who sustained grievous injuries in road accidents.

In the first incident, S Mohanraj, a resident of Anagaputhur, Chennai, was riding his motorcycle near Pammal when a van hit his bike. He sustained injuries on December 24, 2016. Mohanraj contended that the van was driven in a rash and negligent manner and hence he deserved the compensation as the van was insured with the said insurance firm. Countering this, the insurance firm denied the allegations and claimed that accident was occurred due to the petitioner’s rash and negligent driving.
Recording the submissions, the tribunal ordered the firm to pay compensation of Rs 3.9 lakh with an interest of 7.5 per cent per annum.
In the second incident, petitioner Senthilkumar, a resident of Vinayagapuram, was walking on the road near Erukkanchery on July 6, 2015, when he was hit by a motorcycle and sustained grievous injuries. Senthilkumar contended that the rider was rash and negligent. Since the vehicle was insured with the said firm, they are liable to pay the compensation, Senthilkumar submitted.
Recording the submissions, Judge V Sutha, who presided over the tribunal, directed the insurance firm to pay Rs 2.9 lakh with an interest of 7.5 per cent per annum.
