    Portuguese engineer dies in wall collapse

    A 51-year-old engineer from Portugal died after a wall collapsed in a private glass manufacturing firm in Sripermbudur while servicing the chimney on Monday.

    The deceased was identified as Karlos Simmons from Portugal. The incident happened at Saint Gobain, a glass manufacturing company functioning in Sriperumbudur. Police sources said that the chimneys in the factory are from Portugal and a team from there would come yearly once to service them.


    Last week, a group of 28 people from Portugal arrived at Sriperumbudur and was involved in the servicing works. On Monday afternoon, a 20-feet concrete wall which was attached to the chimney collapsed while six of them were working. Simmons was trapped under the debris died on the spot. Others escaped without any injury.


    On information, the Sriperumbudur police visited the spot and retrieved the body. It was sent to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.
