Fruit prices go up due to supply shortage

“For last couple of days, prices have increased as there is shortage of supply in the market. There is more demand for Indian apple, which is now being sold for Rs 3,000 (per 23 kg box). Pomegranate is being sold for Rs 150 per kg, sweet lime Rs 60 per kg and grape for Rs 600 to Rs 650 (10 kg). We are expecting the prices to decrease only in March or April. Until then, there will be fluctuation in prices,” said S Dhanasekar, secretary, Vegetable, Fruits and Flower Merchants’ Association. Previously, apples were sold for Rs 1,000 per 23 kg, pomegranate for Rs 100 per kg, grape for Rs 350-400 (10kg) , and sweet lime for Rs 40 per kg

The vegetable traders in the market, however, saw a fall in prices. According to traders, the prices would increase from mid-March. “The prices decreased two weeks ago, and from Sunday it was less than usual as we started receiving more vegetables. From March 15, the vegetable prices will increase as the season for second crops will start, and there will be shortage of supply. So, the prices will double,” said P Sukumaran, secretary, Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants’ Association. Currently, onion is being sold for Rs 15 – Rs 30 per kg, tomato for Rs 15 per kg, beans Rs 15 – Rs 20 per kg, carrot Rs 20 – Rs 25 per kg, cabbage Rs 8 – Rs 10, radish Rs 10, and beetroot for Rs 8 – Rs 10 per kg. The flower prices remain steady for more than a week due to continued inflow, said the traders.
