According to a Chennai Corporation statement, as many as 5,759 polling stations have been identified of which 135 stations are allocated for female voters. “Also, another 135 polling stations are allocated for male voters. As many as 5,489 stations are for both male and female voters,” the statement said.

While releasing the list, Chennai Corporation Commissioner and district election officer G Prakash said that an all-party meeting would be held on March 2 and final list of polling stations would be released on March 6 after incorporating suggestions gathered during the all-party meeting.

Of the 15 zones, Teynampet zone has the highest number of polling stations numbering 639. The zone has total voters of more than 6.22 lakh. With more than 6.29 lakh voters, Kodambakkam zone has 611 polling stations. Manali zone has only 97 polling stations, which is the least. There are more than 59.18 lakh voters in the entre Chennai Corporation area.

“Number of voters for one polling booth should not exceed 1,400 voters. However, we prepared the list by including 1,350 or 1,360 voters to have a buffer. We expect new voters would apply for name inclusion and in those cases, the buffer will help us. Or, we will be forced to prepare a fresh list of polling stations,” a Chennai Corporation official said.
