Fishermen to be hired for Nemmeli plant: Metro Water
Allaying the fear of fisher folk about losing their livelihood, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metro Water) promised them of jobs in the construction and maintenance of the under-construction desalination plant in Nemmeli.

At a stakeholders’ meeting on Thursday at Suleri Kattukuppam fishing village near Nemmeli where the construction of 150 million litres per day (MLD) desalination plant recently commenced, the fishermen expressed concerns claiming that their livelihood has been affected due to the construction thedesalination plant.
They also handed over several representations and demanded assistance.
“We would take steps to provide Rs 5,000 per month the fishermen during off-season, and take measures to provide permanent job to the educated youngsters of Suleri Kattukuppam village at the desalination plants,” assured Metro Water executive director T Prabhushankar.
He also assured the creation of playfield, sewage facility, community centres, anganwadi centre and an overhead tank to provide 24-hour water. “We will take steps to renovate damaged houses in the village,” the official added.
Meanwhile, a Metro Water statement said that the school in the village would be upgraded into smart school, and the students would be provided scholarship. Also, along with the Fisheries department, it would create artificial coral reef to provide income to the fishermen, the statement added.
