Meenakshi Sundaram (34) of Nolambur, who runs a supermarket in Mogappair, came across an advertisement in December that claimed that Rs 50 lakh could be arranged as loan for a commission of one per cent. Believing it, Meenakshi Sundaram, who wanted funds to expand his business, called the number given in the advertisement. The person at the other end promised to get in touch after the money was arranged.

On Friday, Meenakshi Sundaram received the call. The caller asked him to come to a mall in Vadapalani with Rs 2 lakh for document charges. When he went there, the man showed a suitcase full of cash and collected Rs 2 lakh from him. The fraudster also took five cheques for Rs 10 lakh each as collateral before handing over the suitcase to Meenakshi Sundaram. When he reached home and checked cash, Meenakshi Sundaram was shocked to find that the suitcase was full of counterfeit notes. He lodged a complaint at Vadapalani police station. When contacted, an official said that they have collected the CCTV footage to verify the victim’s claims and register a case. Further investigation is on.
