Motorists demand urgent repair of Perambur twin bridge

The twin bridge at Perambur, which provides a crucial link to thousands around the neighbourhood and beyond, is ridden with potholes that are slowing the traffic down to a crawl, lamented motorists who travel through it every day. There have also been accidents, they alleged, blaming the civic body of not taking prompt steps to maintain it.

Since its inauguration in 2011, the bridge has been serving as a crucial link for the residents of Perambur, Jawahar Nagar, Kolathur and Ayanavaram. It was in a good condition in the initial few years. But allegedly due to poor maintenance by the Greater Chennai Corporation, the bridge developed cracks. That was attended to, but now it is dotted with potholes, said motorists, charging the civic body of not repairing it promptly.

According to residents and motorists, there were several instances of two-wheeler riders falling after trying to avoid the potholes. It gets even worse during night hours and monsoon, they added.

“It is particularly dangerous when it rains. The bridge urgently requires repair so that the motorists do not face risks to their limbs and life. But the authorities have not taking any steps,” said Hariharan R, a resident of Perambur. That is not all, said residents. One of them alleged that the pedestrian lane is often occupied by antisocial elements at night, making it difficult for the common public to use it. Also, there are autorickshaws parked in the middle of the bridge, which further reduces the space available for motorists.

When contacted, a senior Corporation official admitted that they have received complaints regarding the condition of the bridge.“We will start the repair work on the bridge soon,” the official assured.
