The police are inquiring whether he slipped and fell into the river while running away.

The deceased, identified as J Suresh (37) of Manavala Nagar in Tiruvallur, was part of a group that had gathered near the liquor store when the stock from three Tasmac shops on Karkuzhai Street in Tiruvallur was being shifted to a community hall following incidents of theft attempts at Tasmac shops.

While the Tasmac staff were taking the stock from the shop and keeping it in the transport vehicle, the men, all desperate for a drink, began asking them to give them a few bottles. They were chased away by the police team that had accompanied the Tasmac workers. Officials said Suresh, who was part of the crowd, was missing since then. On Tuesday afternoon, his body was found floating in Cooum near Periyakuppam.

Meanwhile, unidentified persons escaped with 10 carton boxes full of liquor bottles from a truck parked inside a Tasmac godown at Ambattur Industrial Estate.
