NGO seeks fund to help Narikuravas in city
Eco-society India, a citybased NGO, is distributing dry ration kit to Narikurava families residing in South Chennai. But, they claim that they are unable to distribute relief to all since the daily wage labourers, who are starving are too many and they have been unable to help all of them owing to paucity of funds.
Chennai
The Narikuravas live a hand to mouth existence by selling bead products in public places like the beach. But now, after the lockdown, they are reportedly starving and are at a loss about whom to approach for help.
“At present we are distributing dry ration kit worth Rs 550 each to 30 such families. But as we do not have enough funds, there is a situation that one kit is being shared by two families. There are some Narikuravas who asked for help, which we were able to extend. But still, there are many daily wage labourers who are starving without any help,” said Darwin Annadurai, a volunteer at Eco-society India.
The NGO also claimed that their volunteers are trying to identify daily wage labourers in the city who need help and that they have identified such workers in Pallavaram, Kotturpuram, Poonamallee, and Minjur.
“The products which we have distributed will be sufficient to last at least for a week. We are raising funds to supply more such kits to daily wage workers. Also, we have asked the Corporates to extend funds to feed such families. We are also in the process of identifying people in the city and we need more volunteers,” said R Praveen a volunteer with the NGO.
