The Greater Chennai Corporation has imposed new restrictions to the volunteers and NGOs to deliver food items to the homeless and guest workers in the city.
Chennai
According to a Chennai Corporation statement, volunteers should inform the place and time of food distribution 48 hours in advance to the zonal officials concerned. Food items should be distributed only after the Chennai Corporation and food safety departments certify the locations are suitable for distribution.
“Food should be prepared within the zone where the NGOs intend to distribute food. Food distribution has been banned in containment zones. Distribution should be completed before the permitted time. Only three persons, including the driver, will be allowed at the spot,” the statement said. The statement explained that the restrictions have been imposed after the Madras High Court gave directions to regulate the food distribution.
The release added that the civic body is providing shelter and foods to more than 6,000 persons from other states and districts. Also, dry rations have been provided to more than 25,000 persons across the city. Earlier, the civic body had directed the volunteers to avail permission before distribution of food.
