Residents of AP islets barred entry into fishing hamlet near Gummidipoondi
Residents from two islets that are part of Andhra Pradesh, who usually come to Sunnambukulam fishing hamlet near Gummidipoondi to buy essential commodities, were in for a rude shock after they were banned from entering due to fear of pandemic. Finally, local officials intervened on their behalf and made arrangements to provide them the materials.

Even though the islets Irukkam and Venadu are part of Andhra Pradesh, most of the residents there are Tamil-speaking communities who frequently visit Sunnambuklam fishing hamlet located near Pulicat lake via boat to buy essentials.
However, after the State borders were closed as part of the nationwide lockdown, Sunnambukulam villagers were apprehensive of allowing anyone from outside, including those from the islets, inside the village.
The matter was taken up with Gummidipoondi tahsildar Kumar, who, along with other officials, held talks with the residents of the islets. It was then decided to allow them up to the boat jetty in Pulicat lake.
The officials sought the help of volunteers to provide them with essentials. Since Saturday, the residents of islets are being stopped at Sunnambukulam boat jetty, local sources said.
