    Ambattur, Manali zones now in corona map after journo, worker test +ve

    After remaining safe from coronavirus infection since the outbreak was first reported, Ambattur and Manali zones in the Greater Chennai Corporation have reported their first positive cases on Tuesday night.

    The infected person in Ambattur is one of 27 employees of a private news channel who were confirmed positive.

    “The affected person lives in Collector Nagar in Mogappair. Soon after the test results were released, we declared the locality as containment zone and brought in restrictions,” an official said.

    While the 32-year-old is under treatment, his family and friends who had come in contact with him have been asked to remain in self-isolation. The civic body would collect samples from them to prevent further spread of the virus. Samples would also be collected from other residents in the locality.

    Meanwhile, a housekeeping worker working in Egmore railway station has been confirmed positive on Tuesday night. The infected worker resides in PRK Sharma Street in Manali.

    “We sealed the locality after the test result confirmed infection. Samples from his family, close and extended contacts have been sent for testing.

    Further action will be taken after the test results are available,” an official from the zone said.

    Until Tuesday, Ambattur and Manali were only zones where COVID-19 cases were reported.

    The number of positive cases witnessed a steep rise in Royapuram zone after the news channel staff tested positive. On Tuesday day alone, the civic body identified 24 positive cases in the zone. Nine new cases were reported in Tondiarpet zone where the total cases touched now 46.

    As on Wednesday morning, the densely populated Royapuram zone, in which Central railway station, Egmore railway station, Broadway bus terminus and Kasimedu fishing harbour fall under, had 116 positive cases. Of them, 18 persons recovered and 5 deceased.

    Colleagues, cop, kin catch infection from supervisor 

    Indicating the rapid spread of the virus, two housekeeping staff and a GRP head constable in Egmore railway station contracted COVID-19 from a housekeeping supervisor, who was working at the railway station.
    According to sources from the Greater Chennai Corporation, a male housekeeping supervisor in the Egmore railway station was confirmed COVID-19 positive three days ago.
    “Following this, we had taken samples from other workers in the railway station and also his family members. The test result revealed two sweepers, a male and female, are infected on Tuesday night. They were working on a contract basis. A GRP head constable also tested positive,” an official said.
    The 42-year-old head constable attached to Government Railway Police was posted at the Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and Systems (CCTNS) that manages the TN police website.
    A resident of Railway Police quarters on Poonamallee High Road, he subjected himself to the test on Monday. After the result returned positive on Tuesday, he was admitted to the special ward at RGGGH. His one-year-old daughter and sister-in-law were also subjected to medical tests and quarantined.He is the second cop after the sub-inspector of Esplanade police station. 
    Of the two sweepers, the male worker is a resident of Manali and the female worker is from Pattalam.
