The deceased, Jayaram (18) was a school dropout and was doing odd jobs while his father Ravi is an auto driver. Jayaram, who stepped out on Saturday evening, did not return and while his parents were searching for him, Jayaram’s sister received a WhatsApp audio the next day from Jayaram’s friend Vicky, which was a cacophony of different voices. Jayaram’s mother then complained with Tiruvottiyur police and a man missing case was registered.

Police, after hearing the recording, questioned Vicky who said he had called Jayaram around 9.45 pm the previous day when he heard the noises from the other end. “After recording the call for five minutes, he called him again but the phone was switched off,” said police.

A special team led by sub-inspector Khadar Meeran along with constables Saravanakumar, Bhaskar and Subbu cracked the case and one Nagaraj of Kaladipet was picked up as he had Jayaram’s two-wheeler.

Based on his inputs, other suspects, Surya, Joseph, Ali Bhai, Mothiya and Ganesan, were picked up. Investigation revealed that Jayaram approached the gang near Tiruvottiyur Toll Plaza for ganja.

“They took the money, returned a few minutes later and told him police took the money. Jayaram, who felt they were cheating, slapped one of them. It led to a quarrel and they smashed his head with stones and liquor bottles, killing him on the spot. Later, they buried the body at the same spot and fled,” said police. The accused were produced before the magistrate and remanded

The body was exhumed in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Subbulakshmi, Assistant Commissioner Anandkumar, Inspector Arokiyaraj, Tahsildar and Village Administrative officer and sent to for post-mortem.
