Frustration, fear and fatigue mount as lockdown extends

On Friday, it was announced that the nationwide lockdown will continue with certain concessions based on the severity of cases for two more weeks. However, many locals received the news with less enthusiasm than the first two times, expressing frustrations and anxieties as no final conclusion draws near.

Though many expected an extension due to the rising number of cases in the city, for some, the lack of socialisation is taking a toll on their mental health. One local of Mogappair said, “Before, we used to make memories by going outside and speaking to people. Now, there’s no outlet for that, so the days pass by in a daze. I kept going over the pictures in my phone of certain memories so that I can remember them while I wait it out. But this can’t last forever.” These feelings of isolation are exaggerated for those living alone in the city. Adding to this, many are also plagued with the fear for their family, who live apart from them, and anxieties surrounding their well-being. “Calling my family daily helps the anxiety a little.

However, my parents are old and are staying in a red zone. This makes me worry a lot. Coronavirus has changed everything about our lives as we know it. If and when flights resume, the costs will be expensive and we will have to somehow practice social distancing in an aircraft. It is the anxiety of not knowing when I will see them next that worries me,” said a resident of Ayyanavaram.

Those working from home are also feeling fatigue from the cycle of balancing work and home life in the same space, and were looking forward to seeing a laxer shutdown. These hopes dashed, many rues the stressful scenarios they are currently in, which is neither conducive for their professional nor their personal lives. Many stuck in the city, having travelled from another state, are also anxious to return to their hometowns, and wished to see an easing on travel restrictions.
